Meet the Musicians

Joe McNicholsJoe McNichols - Trumpet& Flugelhorn

Raised in Philadelphia, Joe McNichols started his trumpet studies at age nine. He studied under renowned teacher Tony Marchione, whose pupils include Randy Brecker and Lee Morgan, at North Catholic High School, At 16, Joe won a seat in the trumpet section of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, which included trumpeters: Tony Bonsera, Al Rochlin and later Nick Marchione (Tony’s Son). Joe studied Music Education and Trumpet Performance at Temple University. He performed in various ensembles, including: Curtis Institute Orchestra, University of Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and World Youth Orchestra Symphony, which performed in Red Square, Moscow. Theater and Freelance Experience: Valley Forge Music Fair, Media Theater, Ocean City Pops, Port Richmond Theater Company. Solo and Chamber Music: broadcasts with Boston Brass Ensemble, television broadcasts in Reading, Pennsylvania with David McConnell, Principal Trumpet Master class at Temple University with Wynton Marsalis and currently a member of the Serenata Jazz Quintet. Joe was one of the musicians that joined SJQ in the early formation of the ensemble.

 

Peter GaudiosoPeter Gaudioso - Drums & Percussion

Philadelphia native Peter Gaudioso has been playing Drums for 18 years. Educated at Settlement Music School and Community College of Philadelphia, he has studied under Philly greats, such as Larry Mckenna, Trudy Pitts, Jimmy Bruno, Eric Johnson and Bill Kerrigan. Peter founded "Jazz Soup" jam session four years ago. He is the Happy Hour jazz drummer at Time Restaurant, and works with Backseet Theatre Productions throughout the year. Peter’s sensitive style and approach to the drums have kept him busy on the scene. This is Peter’s tenth year with Serenata Music. Peter was one of the musicians that joined SJQ in the early formation of the ensemble.

 

Matt DavisMatt Davis - Guitarist & Composer

Matt Davis is a guitarist, teacher, arranger and composer based in the Philadelphia and New York.  Hailed as "incredible" by the Philadelphia Daily News, and "eloquent" by Jazztimes Magazine, Matt's original 12 piece modern chamber jazz ensemble, "Aerial Photograph" has released three CD's, and performs regularly in and around the tri-state area.  Matt has shared the stage with notable musicians, such as Odean Pope, The Silk Road Ensemble, Dave Liebman, Paulina Oliveros, John Swana, Terrell Stafford, Mickey Roker, Jon Hollenbeck and many others. He has received numerous awards and honors, including grants from ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, The National Parks Service, The Banff Center, etc. Matt currently serves as Senior Lecturer in Jazz guitar performance at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and has also recently earned his M.A. in Music at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

 

Thomas RazlerThomas B. Razler - Tenor Sax & Clarinet

Thomas Razler earned his A.A. in Music from Bucks County Community College and B.A. in Jazz Performance from Berklee College Of Music. A regular on the Philly jazz scene, Thomas can be seen playing various club dates in and around the city. In addition to Serenata Jazz Quintet Thomas has also played with The Thomas B. Razler Quartet, Fuzilla, The Suntones, Delaware Valley Wind Symphony, The Puzzlebox Experiment, Main St. Sound and the Big Mess Orchestra.

 

Warren E. Frederick Jr.Warren E. Frederick Jr. - Vibraphones & Drum Set

Warren Frederick graduated from West Chester University in 1981 with a B.S. in Music Education. He has been an instrumental music director at Delran High School for 25 years. Warren’s performance credits include: Classical Percussionist on Scott Wilkerson's "This American Earth," Percussionist with the Santa Fe Symphony (various performances), Founder of "Standard Edition" and multiple performances with Serenata Jazz Quintet/Sextet on vibraphone/drum set.

 

Emily Shick BollesEmily Shick Bolles - Vocals (Soprano) & Piano

Emily Shick Bolles is a 2002 summa cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College, where she majored in Music Education and Voice.  Emily recently completed her graduate studies in Music Therapy at Drexel University. Emily has appeared as a soloist in a performance with the Bucks County Youth Orchestra and Bucks County Community College Choir. She frequently gives recitals in the area, and often performs and collaborates with various Philadelphia-based music groups such as Serenata Jazz Quintet on vocals/piano, David Janes and Psalmships. Emily is currently working as a music teacher and music therapist at the Academy in Manayunk (Philadelphia), a private school for students with language based learning disabilities.

 

Anthony JonesAnthony J. Jones - Double Bass & Cello

Anthony Jones attended Combs College of Music, University of the Arts and Temple University, earning a Ph. D. equivalency in Music Performance and Music Technology, with Certification in Music Education. He studied bass with Carl Torello of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and cello with Orlando Cole of the Curtis Institute. Anthony is professor of Bass Studies at Immaculata University and orchestra conductor at Moorestown High School. He has given private lessons to students who placed in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University and many other universities around the country. Anthony participated in Jazz Master classes with jazz bassist Buster Williams and jazz great Peter Nero at Combs College of Music.  Classical Performances: Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra, Bayonne Symphony Orchestra, Serenata Piano Trio and Serenata String Quartet with Classical Guitar. Jazz Performances: Serenata Jazz Quintet (SJQ) has performed at various venues in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York. Anthony has played extensively in the Philly jazz scene for years. He has played in jazz clubs in Center City, North Philly, Germantown and West Philly.
